About Our Organization
In 2006 Dennis and Sharonlee Diehl brought the Buddy Walk to Rehoboth Beach as a way to welcome Sharonlee’s brother, David Samson into the community. David, who at age 55 had lost his mother, has Down syndrome. Buoyed by the overwhelming community support for the event, the Diehl’s created the Buddy Fest weekend in Rehoboth.
The Rehoboth Beach community invited Down syndrome families and friends from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. Hotels offer discounted rates and local stores and eateries welcome visitors with special surprises and giveaways. Special events are held Friday night and all day Saturday.
The Buddy Walk, the main event, is held Saturday morning on the boardwalk. In 2008, 1000 walkers participated and were led by bagpipes, color guard and cheerleaders. Following the walk, music and entertainment is provided at the bandstand.
Proceeds from the weekend activities are donated to the National Down Syndrome Society, Down Syndrome Association of DE, Best Buddies of DE and local organizations, such as KSI Industries and Chimes, that provide educational and occupational opportunities to people with Down syndrome.
